“Over Paid, Over Sexed and Over Here”
Our next meeting takes place on Wednesday 4th November at 7.30pm in the Sharman (Studio) room at the Haverhill Arts Centre.
We have the pleasure of having Geoffrey Kay come along to present his talk “Over Paid, Over Sexed and Over Here”.
“A chance meeting with an elderly neighbour, and what he told me, sparked an interest in events that occurred in Suffolk when the United States Army Air Force moved onto bases in 1943. I was intrigued to think of the culture shock when Suffolk folk met so many Americans in such large numbers. What I discovered was that it was a three-way culture shock, and not two-way as I had imagined. The United States Army Air Force was a segregated service and for the first time black and white GI’s were thrown together, resulting in some disastrous outcomes.
My story is about how these three separate groups of people interacted during WW11, what they had to learn from each other, and the long-term effect that this encounter had on American society, long after the war had finished.”
